Wow. I cannot tell you how much I needed to read this today!!!! I’m not alone I have another 20-something teenager on my side to freak out about the future with 💖 I admire you so much can’t wait to see what’s ahead!
You’re going to be great at it. You’ve already accomplished and packed in so much, having the urge to grow and explore is going to take you so far. Good luck and thanks for all the inspiration.
You make the most thoughtful recipes, I’m excited for the next chapter of your journey! Hustle without physically killing yourself, at 27 that’s what I was doing in the kitchen. Can’t wait to see what’s next, thanks for all the cake inspo 🫶🏽
Thank you Donna! Yeah, my poor little body is worn out. Kitchens are BRUTAL even when you're just working from home. Different pains. Excited to finsh this round out strong as I transition in to the future ♡ thanks for following along!
Proud of you! Here for the recipe testing. I'm turning 30 in a couple of months and though I haven't exactly landed on my feet since leaving the pastry life, I can say it is worth taking the leap. And also taking time to rest as much as you can!
Your journey post pastry life has def been inspiring to me. It feels like such a gargantuan leap, so i'll just slowly scale down the side of this scary mountain lolol ♡ Thanks Jenny!!
The baking community supports you!! I often feel this way, and just like you feel I have no marketable skills outside the kitchen (in my mind anyway–of course we have many non-baking skills!). I don't necessarily regret choosing culinary school over a more traditional degree, but it was a ~choice~. The issue of sustainability looms for most kitchen folks, I believe. We'll see how it shakes out.
But you are such a bright talent! I've tried several of your recipes and they really work, so I feel like I can really trust the work you are putting out there. Whatever you do I'm sure you will excel.
Excited for your next step! Wishing you all the best xx Roxanne
oh definitely we all have non-kitchen skills that would help us excel in different career paths. AND a lot of kitchen skills are still applicable to the "real world".
I think a lot about the college experience that I "missed out" on chasing the food industry. But, here we're here and it'll all work out some way some how.
So grateful I got an August cake from you, I feel so lucky (it was amazing).
I became your fan because of your artistry and eye, you make the most amazing recipes. If you ever publish a cookbook know I'm the first one in line. But honestly even just the eye candy you delivered satiated me for a year until I could order a cake from you. Please take care of yourself, creators give so much of their hearts.
I understand this so much-something so tied up in your identity, that just began as a hobby and now completely overcomes you is so scary if you feel you need to take a step back. Trust your instincts, you made it though a hard time in 2020 which brought you here, you will make it through this one too!!
best of luck in the next move! have been in your shoes and it is definitely wonderful to rediscover baking as something you are able to do purely because you love it <3
Feeling this. I’m a 33 year-old who had fallen in love with pastry life some years ago and am now realizing how unsustainable it is for me and the life I want to build. You are not alone! I also know many people who made hard pivots (in careers, relationships, etc.) well into their 40s and 50s. So NO sorry lol it does not all click at 30 🙃
What I will say is you have demonstrated some talents and skills that can be translated across so many industries: attention to detail, organization, creativity, photography, social media literacy, written communication, the list goes on! And the work ethic alone that is needed to sustain a home-baking business is something that many people lack and it will take you far.
You might need something just to pay the bills til you figure out what’s next- but baking will be a part of your life forever, though it may take shape in a multitude of ways. Keep your heart, eyes, and ears open to the opportunities that will arise because I know there will be plenty. <3
Thank you for sharing all your solid, delicious recipes with us! Yours is one of the few newsletters and posts I look forward to reading. Whatever you decide, I wish you only but the best of luck!!!
Life after 30 is even weirder so it sounds like you're on the right path!!! Thank you for sharing this with us. I'm planning a trip to Cali in November and I'm determined to try your pastries.
ugh, I would like to share some STRONG words with the people who said life after 30 just *clicks* for LYING TO ME. but yes please please please let me bake for you <333
I’m 27 too, and on that ride of ‘what is going on’ right along with you. Thanks for sharing your honesty here and for your inspo to the online cake community. Recipe development sounds like a fun path forward that harnesses that creativity with the love of food. Can’t wait to see what you continue to share with us!
