thank you for this. i needed to be reminded. actually ordered myself a cake to pick up today to celebrate the end of january. i would have baked myself but currently displaced and living in a friends guest house with no oven.
i cook to feed my soul. this post just nailed it for me.
february, my wife's birthday(something with chocolate); special ring day with wife and then valentine's day(chocolate strawberries); sister's birthday(some cookies with peanut butter) and all month long is carnival king cake every friday.
I love a grandma photo. There is absolutely nothing in this whole world like a grandmother. I may not live in my grandmother's house but I do have so many treasures from both of them in my house and I'm grateful for it.
January? The month where my husband's job at an organization that does work in West Africa absolutely vaporized due to a memo and I am a homeschool parent to my non-binary almost teenager? That January? I don't even know her. Bring on Pavlova February. The price of eggs be damned.
Sending love as you navigate what's to come, especially to your child. I refuse to let them be anything but recognized and appreciated ♡ I know can't help out by proximity- but, if you ever need help finding online resources etc, do not hesitate to reach out please!
Baking brings me joy and peace in my mind. I have so many levels of love for my time in the kitchen, for me when I achieve something hard/new, for my family and friends to show them my love. There’s something about bread, the simple act of sharing bread, it makes people closer. Yesterday I baked sour dough with jalepeno and cheddar for Ausencio, the man who has been overseeing our kitchen renovation and who’s brother died unexpectedly two weeks ago. Thank you for sharing your grandmother, she emanates love. Let’s celebrate beautiful strong matriarchs who loved us in their kitchens. it’s what I aspire to be. My grandmother taught me how to make citron tarts with fresh whipped cream tops, morning tea for the shearers who sheared her sheep. Thinking about those moments is like warm waves of love.
Radical joy IS resistance. It’s so hard to do something, especially post online, when everything “around” us feels like it’s crumbling apart. But posting a silly cookie or a new recipe allows me, at least, to feel some normalcy at a time when nothing feels normal. Thank you for sharing this post and the sweet photo of you and your grandma. The community you built here, on social media, in the “real world” is necessary because individualism ain’t it. Today, I’m going to bake some cookies for my neighbor and try to keep building my community too. Happy February finally!
